Asia: Bovis Lend Lease Pharmaceutical honoured for its Safety Excellence at National Awards Bovis Lend Lease Pharmaceutical in Singapore has been presented with Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) for two of its projects, Abbott Nutrition International’s Infant Nutritionals Manufacturing Plant and Lonza Biologics’ Mammalian Cell Culture Plant 1.

The SHARP awards recognize projects or worksites that achieved good results because of implementation of sound safety and health management systems.

These awards, which are conferred by the Workplace Safety and Health Council in collaboration with the Singapore Ministry of Manpower, were presented at a gala event graced by the Minister of Manpower on the 2nd October, 2008.

“Bovis Lend Lease Pharmaceutical is honoured to win these prestigious national awards on two of our projects. As an organization which is passionate about safety, this recognition is highly meaningful to us as it is an industry testament to the success of our vision and commitment to operate Incident and Injury Free across all our projects,” said LK Cheah, General Manager, Bovis Lend Lease Pharmaceutical Singapore.

More than 4,000 workers who worked on the two projects in Tuas Biomedical Park clocked over 10 million man-hours and achieved a Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate of less than 0.06 which is five times lower than the national average.

Safety is already a key consideration from the initial design development phase on each project. Safety measures are taken in the initial project planning when project and construction managers work closely with engineers to conduct constructability reviews and risk assessments. They strive to eliminate or mitigate risks during the construction and post-handover phases.

Worksite workers’ welfare is also a top priority. There are rest shelters, canteens offering subsidised meals, and well-equipped medical centres manned by full-time paramedics. Self-contained housing with laundry, recreational and other amenities are provided for those working on some of the larger projects.

“The safe and timely deliveries of the two projects within budget are the ultimate validation of the success of our safety programmes,” added LK. “Our colleagues on the two projects can be justifiably proud that they have delivered two complex world-class process facilities and met all of the highly challenging client performance metrics without any compromise on Safety.”

John Machulski, Lonza Biologics Plant’s Senior Project Director commented: “All of us at Lonza have been impressed by the safety culture Bovis Lend Lease Pharmaceutical brought to our projects in Singapore. The focus on safety and the attitude created among the site workers is unparallel to anything I have seen in my career.”

Bovis Lend Lease Pharmaceutical is currently providing Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management to Lonza’s second bioreactor plant in Tuas Biomedical Park.
